At the Globe Theatre

Really enjoyed the production of The Tempest I saw today. The theatre is very impressive but they were a tough lot those Elizabethan theatre lovers. I got hot when the sun hit the gallery I was in, cold when the clouds came and the wind blew and my backside knew I had been sitting on a wooden bench for three hours. However I thoroughly enjoyed the show which was very funny.

V & A

Victoria and Albert Museum today. London was a Tower of Babel perhaps because of the long weekend, as I went up the escalator I had Chinese in front of me, German beside me and French behind. I went to the treasures of the Royal Courts exhibition then on to the medieval section.


This screen was impressive but the tomb beside it was a worry


If I looked like this guy I would give it a miss

Gloucester

Realised I have short changed Gloucester a real city but with a considerable past. Didn't see the ghost of lady Jane Grey that supposedly haunts the place but didn't miss her either. Lots of historic houses and a fabulous cathedral

Corinium

Not a huge amount left of Roman occupation here, most of it in the museum. The town itself is pretty in a rather relentless fashion, they obviously value the towns appearance and have since the 1900s at least, designing new houses to fit in and using the local stone. It's all a bit like Berry in a way. Lots of shops geared to the tourist trade but in a very upmarket way. Very pleasant place to spend time with tons of really excellent food places but once the weekend is over back to the real world

Roman baths

They have certainly done more excavation since we were here last and developed the museum as well. It now gives a much clearer picture of what was. You can also try the waters, nasty but not the worst I've had

At the Royal

Local bus to Bath, fairly hair raising trip whizzing along narrow country lanes with the hedge brushing both sides of the bus. If anyone was coming the other way they had to back up a driveway to let us through. Arrived and went to the abbey and the baths.

Southern England

I am enjoying my jaunt around these parts. The towns so far, Winchester, Wells and Glastonbury have been small and unsoiled by modern development. They have fostered tourism and encouraged the markets and independent shops that are most likely to part you from your cash in the nicest way. They have the benefit of magnificent cathedrals and Abbeys

Glastonbury

Had a fun time in Glastonbury which is an absurd mix of the ruined Abbey with its Arthurian claims, the Chalice Spring which is rather torn between Joseph and the Earth Mother and a High street that is potentially very high indeed. Crystals, magic, healing and incense well at every side.

Up the revolution

Well against the British anyway this is Paul Revere he is everywhere. Even as they acknowledged that it was the poem that made him so prominent they celebrate his fame. All this makes Boston much more of a tourist town. The narrow freedom trail all around the town is perpetually tramped by pious modern pilgrims.

Harvard

Some handsome colonial style buildings and the museums were well presented but a little disappointed in Harvard. They haven't had the time that Oxford and Cambridge have had to develop and it shows. Clearly despite the archaeological tradition all the best material went elsewhere which seems to be general for university museums so interesting but not as I thought it would be.

Boston

Had an interesting time here. Not quite as I expected. The museum of fine arts was much more than I had thought and took two days just to see the bits I wanted, really fabulous. The impressionists were impressive the American stuff duplicated the developments in Australia quite closely which was strangely interesting

The Field Museum

Very child orientated which tended to grate sometimes. The collections were excellent but the texts with them could set your teeth on edge. The McDonald's inside the museum was a surprise too. Still at least the emphasis was on outreach and education.

Oriental Institute

The university area was very leafy, quiet and peaceful. Lots of large houses and very residential in its atmosphere. The Institute had an interesting collection that covered many civilizations

Some fabulous stuff. Had a great day roaming the collection. Pity the antiquities section was closed but still much left to see

Five days they have been out, demonstrating each afternoon and creating deadlock in the traffic.

The windy city

Been here a few days now and found it in some ways different to what I expected. Much less crowded on the streets, parks and sights than I expected. It's a pleasant and seeming very relaxed place.
