Long weekend here and town pretty much closed down except for a huge parade for local football teams successful season just ended. Had a roast lunch at cafe with treacle sponge pudding with custard. Very satisfying

Last day for Berlin

Slightly more modern subject today, the Berlin museum, covering the history of the city. Some fun things, thumb screws, execution axe, cups for keeping your mustache dry.

Ethnology museum

Amazing collection at the vast, largely unvisited museum. Quite strange to be almost the only person there with the museum staff

Gemaldegalerie

Spent the day looking at the huge collection at the Gemaldegalerie. I don't understand why it's not in the top 10 for museums it's much better than at least the last 5 of the top 10.

Very different styles Berlin and Sydney Botanic Gardens. Sydney being very open and given to park like vistas where Berlin is all hillocks and little dells to give a sense of being alone with nature It also is more meadow like the grass is longer and there are more areas about educating you on varieties of plants, tones of little labels in Latin

Botanic Gardens

Just for a change from museums I went to the Botanic Gardens today. Very different in style to Sydney. Lots of meadows and few massed displays. Fun tho.

Two Alte Museums

Alte Museum and Alte national gallery today. Although it is the weekend it seemed quieter. Sunny and hot again tho the clouds were gathering as I walked back to the hotel. At the gallery there was an exhibition of Rembrandt Bugatti sculpture, I really liked his work

Neues Museum

Another day in the museum but only one today. It has all been rebuilt but in a way that you can see the ravaged traces of its former self. Some amazing Egyptological stuff and even lots of labels in English. Very easy.

Musing on museums

Having the museum pass tempts you to do more which can be quite painful. Pergamon probably would have been enough

Pergamon and Bode museums

Brain overfill from Museum Island. Pergamon is amazing but almost the biggest thing about it is the line to get in. Bode is very civilized but has some weird stuff
